Let’s talk about…

Background:

Most people know of the character Divine; yes, the character. The person who wore the dress, the hair, the heels, the makeup was Harris Glenn Milstead. Born in 1945, weighing only 5 lbs. and 14 oz, dying 42 years later, 6’2” and almost 375 lbs.

There has never been a definitive play or book that has focused just on Glenn/Divine. For 31 years, playwright Donnie has worked on a play about Glenn commonly known as Divine. He has felt that the story about the man behind the mask and what happened in the 42 years of Glenn’s [as many knew him or Divvy] life should be told. And now, it’s coming to the stage.

How did someone from Baltimore, MD, gain celebrity status?

Many factors contributed to it:

Parents who loved and adored their only child.

Fighting to survive bullying and being beaten up while attending school.

Finding a group of teenagers that defined their way and allowed him to ‘join in’.

Meeting David Lochary, who befriended him and helped him embrace his ‘drag’ side.

Being introduced to a young, long-haired wanna be filmmaker and neighbor by the name of John.

Getting in and out of trouble; writing bad checks, renting places he couldn’t afford, living with a mobster - should we go on?

Now, the play:

Dishin’ with Divine is set in Glenn’s NYC penthouse in early March 1988 as he packs for an incredible opportunity: a male role on a hit TV show. This dream of being recognized as a male actor has finally come true, but he notices that he has double-booked himself; he’s to catch a plane in two hours, and he has invited his friends over to chat and party. What should he do? DO BOTH! Through the evening, you will hear stories, get a taste of Glenn, AND as he transforms into two roles that Divine is known for, you’ll be entertained and taken on a journey in about 90 minutes.

Come, dish with the Divine Glenn.

By the way, did you know:

Do you know that Harris Glenn Milstead/Divine would have been 80 years old on October 19th?

  • Did you know that it will be 50 years since he was first seen off-Broadway? [Women Behind Bars]

  • Did you know there is no biography of Glenn/Divine? Glenn’s mom wrote a book “My Son Divine”, Bernard Jay, his manager from 1978-1988, wrote a book, “Not SImply Divine”, and John Waters included him in many works and interviews especially in the 1981 book, “Shock Value”.

So, we here at triangle productions! is going to change all that.

On April 4, 2025, an Industry Invitation Only was held in New York City, with Josh Lamon (Death Becomes Her) featured as Glenn/Divine.

Another reading will be held in Palm Springs at Revolution Stage Company on October 19th, which would have been Glenn/Divine’s 80th birthday.

Then another in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles LGBTQ Cultural Arts Center.

This tour will end with the show getting a full production off-Broadway in 2026.
